John Eckersley Newberry, born in 1820 to Henry Newberry in Manchester, arrived in New South Wales, Australia, a prisoner of the British Empire in 1839. After twelve years, John was granted his freedom and promptly married Bridget Kennedy. John and Bridget had many children. From such children grew larger families who have resulted in many living descendants today in Australia who hold John Eckersley Newberry in high regard as their family patriarch.

John's ancestry has long since been a mystery, being traceable to only his father since studies began.

This paper, however, tells of new research which uncovers such mystery. In doing so, this new study connects a multitude of Newberry families also found in Manchester conclusively to one particular family of the various and vast Devon Newberys.

The finding of this connection results in John's ancestry to be directly traced to the ancient noble Newburgh family of Lulworth and Winfrith in Dorset.
